Possible optic nerve damage from lupus

I was diagnosed with lupus (SLE) in 2005. My doctor placed me on Restasis for chronic dry eyes 2 months ago. Now I am also experiencing double vision as well as blurred vision. My doctor believes that I have optic nerve damage from lupus. He said it is progressive and could lead to vision loss. I am terrified! Can anyone offer some advice?

Re: Possible optic nerve damage from lupus

Update: I have seen my rheumatologist, two opthamologists, a neurologist and an optomotrist. All five agree that my double vision and blurred vision are from dry eyes (from lupus) and astigmatism. They see no sign of optic nerve damage. This is a relief. I am waiting on some prescription glasses that should alleviate my symptoms. Thanks to all of you who offered advice and encouragement!

Once you know the particulars of your diagnosis, be sure to return here and ask whatever questions you have. And have a good look around VisionAware for great information. If your eye condition is not going to get better or it is something that will continue to progress, please know there is help and support for you here! I have a degenerative retinal condition and have lost my vision slowly over the last 30+ years. But I have been able to live a full and satisfying life with the help of training and special devices and technology for the visually impaired. We can talk more about all that once you know what is going on for sure...I will be thinking about you until then...Audrey

Thank you Audrey. I will stay on top of it and make sure they refer me to a specialist.

I cannot stress enough the importance of seeing an eye specialist- your ophthalmologist ( Not optometrist) should be able to refer you to the proper sub specialty like neuro-ophthalmology. I would persist until they have a satisfactory diagnosis. I say this because I had a wrong diagnosis for six years myself. Wishing you all the best, Audrey

Re: Possible optic nerve damage from lupus

Thank you so much for responding. I have an appointment with a regular ophthalmologist July 10 and with my rheumatologist June 30th. I have not had any tests done for my eyes yet.

Re: Possible optic nerve damage from lupus

Hi- I am a peer advisor and a nurse. When I first started having I problems they doctors thought it was multiple sclerosis. They thought I had optic neuritis. Some conditions and possibilities for diagnosis may be treatable. If there is uncertainty I would consider a second opinion I have a question for you... are you seeing a neuro- ophthalmologist and what tests have they done on your eyes?
