The Seeing Eye
The Seeing Eye, [link opens in new window] North America's pioneer dog guide school, was founded in 1929 by Dorothy Harrison Eustis. Since then, it has matched nearly 13,000 specially bred and trained Seeing Eye dogs with nearly 6,000 blind men and women from across the United States and Canada. Graduates of its program live and work around the world.
The Seeing Eye is a philanthropy. Its mission is to help blind people achieve greater independence, dignity and self-confidence through the use of Seeing Eye dogs. In pursuit of this aim, it teaches Seeing Eye dogs to guide blind people; breeds and raises the dogs; teaches instructors the science and technique of training dogs as guides for blind people; instructs blind people in the proper use and care of the dogs; and educates the public about the role of dog guides and the capability of blind people for independent living.
