Recreational Activities, Sports Groups, and Cultural Events for People Who are Blind or Have Low Vision

There are many associations that serve the recreation interests of people who are blind or have low vision.

Some sponsor competitions, form local clubs, or offer training in a wide range of activites, including archery, beep baseball, bowling, chess, cycling, golf, goalball, horseback riding, horseshoes, hunting, judo, sailing and cruises, scuba, skiing (waterskiing, downhill, and cross-country), and just about any sport of interest to you.

These associations can also provide information on adapting equipment for participants who are blind or have low vision, along with tips on safety.

Maine Handicapped Skiing (MHS) is the largest year-round adaptive recreation program in the state of Maine for adults and children with physical disabilities. Over 390 volunteers assist athletes in appreciating the joys and challenges of sports participation.

MHS provides over 3700 lessons during winter and summer, free of charge, thanks to the generous support of individuals, businesses, corporations and foundations that sustain MHS every year.

Form in Art combines art-making studio classes and the study of art history into a unique course for legally blind adults. Visual description and touch tours by specially trained guides help students get an initial experience of select objects in the Museum's galleries.

Historical and subjective information and lectures by conservators and curators supplement this information and teach about the role of the art museum. In studio classes, artist instructors expose the students to a wide variety of materials and techniques to assist and encourage their self-expression.

For more than 26 years, the Skating Association for the Blind and Handicapped, Inc. (SABAH) has taught 9,000 Western New Yorkers who have vision impairment or other physical, cognitive, or emotional challenges to ice skate. Over the past years, locally-raised funds provided instruction to more than 800 people with disabilities.

SABAH provides weekly adaptive ice skating lessons, adaptive skating equipment, intense volunteer support, and the opportunity to perform in an annual ice skating spectacular. SABAH works with people ages 16 months to 72 years.

Ski for Light, Inc. is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that teaches blind, visually- and mobility-impaired adults to cross-country ski. 

Each year Ski for Light, Inc. conducts a week-long event in which blind and mobility-impaired adults are taught the basics of cross-country skiing. During the Ski for Light week, each disabled skier is paired with an experienced, sighted, cross-country skier who acts as ski instructor and guide.

The USBGA promotes the game of golf for people with visual impairments. The BGA membership is for anyone who plays golf and is a totally blind (B-1) or vision impaired (B-2 or B-3) golfer. An application form is available online. The site provides articles on playing and coaching blind golf.
