The Deaf-Blind Program provides high quality services to families, schools, and community service providers in order to ensure that appropriate services are delivered to meet the unique needs of children (from birth to 21), who have a combined hearing and vision loss. The Center for Disabilities Deaf-Blind Program, at the Sanford School of Medicine at The University of South Dakota, is supported by a U.S. Department of Education Grant, # H326C040011.

The South Dakota Association of the Blind (SDAB) is an organization whose purpose is to promote the general welfare of the blind and visually impaired throughout the state of South Dakota; bring the public a better understanding of the efforts and aims of those persons with disabilities; create a spirit of cooperation between blind and sighted people; and be of general service, help, and inspiration to the blind, and work for the blind.

The mission of the Division of Service to the Blind and Visually Impaired (SBVI) is to provide individualized rehabilitation services that result in optimal employment and independent living outcomes for citizens who are blind or visually impaired.

SBVI has offices in Aberdeen, Pierre, Rapid City, and Sioux Falls, where the South Dakota Rehabilitation Center for the Blind is also located.

The role and mission of the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired to provide statewide services to meet the educational needs of sensory impaired children from birth through twenty-one in South Dakota by serving in a dual leadership and resource role in the statewide efforts to serve these students. This mission shall be carried out through cooperative efforts with all appropriate state agencies, educational cooperatives, local education agencies, and college and universities.

It is recognized that the mission of the South Dakota School for the Blind and Visually Impaired is a significant part of the continuum of services in the statewide delivery system for children in need of special education OR special education and related services.
