Michelle has a master's degree in social work with an emphasis in psychotherapy from Tulane University. She worked at the Society for the Blind in Sacramento, California for eight years, where she served as director of client services and a clinical social worker. She also managed a private practice providing individual, group, and family counseling primarily for children and families.

For nearly ten years, she has been actively writing grants both professionally and as a volunteer for a variety of causes pertaining to vision loss and mental health. The successes in grant attainment have allowed her the opportunity to design and develop several innovative curriculums for programs for individuals in need of training and services.

Since 2012, she has been employed as director of community services at the Columbia Lighthouse for the Blind in Washington, D.C. She is also committed to the boards of Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc. and the New Hope Development Corporation. These opportunities and many others have afforded her the opportunity to assist and serve many individuals in need throughout the country.
