How can I make changes in my home so it's easier for me to find things?
Generally speaking, it's easier to find things if you're organized, and stay organized! Everything should have a place, and be in its place when you are not using it.
If you have some remaining vision, you could make use of color contrast and lighting to help you find and do things around your home. For example:
- Place gooseneck or flexible lamps in places where you work, read, or use steps.
- Use color contrast to your advantage. For example, if your grooming things are dark brown or black (such as a hair brush, comb or shaver, etc.,) place them on a white mat on top of the dresser, so they will stand out and be easier for you to see.
Use a contrasting placemat under your dinner plate to help you see the edge of the plate.
This might also help you keep your food on your plate.
The photo shown here illustrates a dark colored plate on a dark colored placement; the lack of contrast lessens visibility.- Put stick-up lights in your closets or keep a strong flashlight in each closet to help you see in and find the things you need.
- Scatter rugs can cause falls, and are a common cause of accidents. You might want to think about eliminating them or make sure they are secure with carpet tacks or Velcro strips.
In some instances, area rugs can be helpful. For example, if you have a coffee table, you may consider placing it on a different color? area rug. By doing this you will be able to feel the rug under your feet before you hit your shin against the table, and if you have some vision, you will be able to see the sharp color contrast. In this case, the rug (secured by the table) can be a useful 'clue' to alert you to the presence of the low table.
If you cannot rely on your vision to give you the information you need, consider using contrasting textures so you can sense when a change is taking place. The mental picture you have of any of your rooms will play an essential role in helping you to locate and then further explore specific areas or items.
