How can I hang pictures, and know that they are level?

Stanley Magnetic Lighted LevelThere are at least 3 options:

1. You can buy an audible level that beeps as your positioning your picture on the wall, and then is silent when your picture is truly level.

2. You can buy a large print or lighted?level. The Stanley Lighted Magnetic Torpedo Level is shown in the photo on this page; it can be purchased from Amazon and at your local hardware store.

3. You can also use a homemade measure, such as a broom handle, yard stick or even a piece of string, to help make sure your picture is hanging level on the wall.

If you use string: measure from the bottom corner on one side of the picture to the floor and then from the other bottom corner to the floor. They should measure the same. Do this by knotting the string, attaching it to the corner with tape or to the wall with a pushpin and repeating it on the other side.

If you use a broom or yard stick, you will probably want to measure from the ceiling, as that may be the shorter distance. Measure from one top corner of the picture to the ceiling and then from the other top corner to the ceiling. When the distance is the same, the picture is level.
