How can I get out of my house, when I always feel so lost?

Before doing this exercise we recommend you?look at Indoor Exercises to Maximize Your Senses. If you have any difficulties with these, or any other exercises, remember an orientation and mobility specialist and vision rehabilitation therapist can also teach you how to move safely and effectively around your own home.

Experiment to see if your sense of hearing will help you out. Each situation is unique, but by sitting quietly you'll know whether you can hear any outdoor sounds such as traffic, birds, road works, or children playing. If you can locate the direction of the sounds then you can walk toward them. (If you feel nervous walking alone you might want to have someone with you, or try using one or two of the protective body techniques.)

The sounds might be especially loud as you approach a window. The location of the window can then play a key role in helping you find the door. For example, if you are in an apartment, the door out of the apartment is often opposite a window. In a house, the door is usually on the same wall as the windows.

If you cannot rely on your hearing to help you locate the door you will need to use your other senses, and possibly benefit from a few lessons from an orientation and mobility specialist or vision rehabilitation therapist (See "Who Provides Vision Rehabilitation Services?")
