How can a blind person walk down a hallway and turn into an open doorway without touching or bumping into anything?
The ability to do this is usually due to making full use of hearing or 'auditory' clues. Try this simple exercise. Walk slowly down a corridor with open doors. As you walk down the hall you will sense a 'closed-in' feeling until you reach an open doorway. At this point, you will experience a sense of openness on your left or right side, depending on which side has the open doorway.
It will take time and practice before you are able to sense these changes. Be patient with yourself but also celebrate the fact that you're learning new skills and increasing your sensory-awareness. If you feel nervous about walking alone, consider having a family member with you, or use some special body protective techniques (see Indoor & Outdoor Travel)?that may help you to feel safe, and less anxious.
