Do I have to learn Braille now that I can no longer see to read?
No, there are several alternatives to Braille.
Tapes/Cassettes/CD's
You can listen to books, newspapers and magazines either on cassettes or CDs.? The major source for audio literature is the Library of Congress, National Library Services. There are branches in all states and the services are free. You can arrange to get these materials through your local library.
Audio books are also becoming popular with the general public and can be purchased at most bookstores and online. See Where to Find Reading.)
Tapes can be created to hold information for your personal and home records. For example, one tape could have names and telephone numbers; another could be your check record, etc.
Computers & Software
If you are a computer user, there is accessibility software that will enlarge the print up to 16 times. Other software will 'read' alond?whatever is on the screen to you. You can control the speed and volume and have the voice repeat either the most recent word, line, or paragraph (see Computer Section).
