The American Foundation for the Blind removes barriers, creates solutions, and expands possibilities so people with vision loss can achieve their full potential.

Geographic area served: All fifty states, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and Guam.
Publications: Through AFB Press, publishes a wide variety of professional, reference, and consumer videos, as well as books in various media, including the seminal Foundations textbook series; the Journal of Visual Impairment & Blindness (JVIB); AccessWorld®: Technology for Consumers with Visual Impairments (online); and the AFB Directory of Services for Blind and Visually Impaired Persons in the United States and Canada, the primary online information resource on services to persons with visual impairments. Also publishes AFB eNews, Words from Washington, and a range of information related to blindness and visual impairment. Fully accessible informational website. Accessible Apps: For the millions of Americans with vision loss looking for information and services, as well as a simple, convenient way to take notes at work, at school, or at home, the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) is pleased to offer several free, accessible apps. Services for Adults

  • Advocacy
    • AFB's Public Policy Center in Washington, DC, collaborates with policymakers in Congress and the Executive Branch to ensure Americans with vision loss have equal rights and opportunities to fully participate in society. AFB's advocacy strategy is backed by a team of experts who conduct and analyze research related to vision loss.
  • Employment/Job Training
    • AFB's CareerConnect is a free online employment resource for job seekers who are blind or visually impaired. CareerConnect presents employment information, career exploration tools, and extensive job seeking guidance for students and adults with vision loss and the professionals who work with them. The website includes a database of currently employed blind or visually impaired individuals who offer mentorship and support individuals entering the workplace or workers who are newly experiencing vision loss and seeking job accommodations.
  • Information and Referral
    • Maintains a toll-free information line (800-232-5463) and an e-mail response service (afbinfo@afb.net). AFB’s graphically rich websites are designed to be fully accessible to blind and visually impaired users. The main AFB website (www.afb.org), offers comprehensive, timely, and authoritative information on every aspect of blindness and visual impairment including an up-to-date, searchable database of nationwide services, message boards, community events, and announcements. The site features an extensive, searchable database of high- and low-tech products and AccessWorld®, AFB’s free, online technology magazine. It also includes the largest collection of Helen Keller memorabilia on the Internet. The newest addition to AFB’s family of websites is VisionAware™, developed in collaboration with Reader’s Digest Partners for Sight, which incorporates AFB’s award-winning SeniorSite and is designed to provide adults of all ages a one-stop resource to cope with vision loss.
