Brief Description

The mission of the Conklin Center for the Blind is to train, assist, and support individuals who are blind and have one or more other disabilities to obtain gainful employment, live independently, participate in community life, and have the freedom to make his or her own choices with dignity.

The Conklin Center provides community-based early intervention services to visually impaired infants, toddlers and their families to assist children in preparing to enter public school ready to learn alongside their sighted peers.

Hours of operation: 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Staff description: 40 full-time, 6 part-time. Uses volunteers.

Services for Adults

  • Assessment
    • Provides functional skills and vocational assessment.
  • Counseling
    • Provides individual and family counseling.
  • Daily Living Skills/Independent Living Skills Training
    • Provides training in activities of daily living, home management skills, and in the use of adaptive techniques and equipment in client's home and community. Provides remedial education, sensory training, supported living, and supported employment. Provides consultation to other agencies. Offers programs in adult continuing education, adult basic education, remedial education, and vocational/skill development.
  • Employment/Job Training
    • Provides prevocational evaluation, career and skill counseling, occupational skill development, job retention, job retraining, vocational placement, supported employment, and follow-along services. Offers work adjustment services and consultation to other agencies
  • Low Vision Services
    • Coordinates with community providers to perform evaluations and provides follow-up on premises.
  • Recreation Services
    • Offers arts and crafts, hobby group, adult continuing education, bowling, swimming, track activities.
  • Support Groups
    • Has an active Alumni Association.
  • Travel/Orientation and Mobility
    • Provides orientation and mobility training.
