Brief Description

Blind Industries and Services of Maryland serves over 2,000 individuals each year with innovative rehabilitation and training programs that put people on the road to independence. There are 14 facilities across Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, Delaware, the District of Columbia, and Kentucky.

Blind Industries is a participating agency in the AbilityOne Program, and a direct source for more than 2000 quality SKILCRAFT products made by Americans who are blind or severely disabled

The Rehabilitation and Training Division offers innovative programs that teach real-world skills, build self confidence, and prepare blind people for the everyday challenges of family, school, and work.

Hours of operation: Mon.-Fri. 8:00 AM-4:30 PM.
Staff description: The majority of the Rebailitation staff is blind or low vision, and act as mentors as well as instructors
Geographic area served: The entire state of Maryland, with rehabilitation and manufacturing locations in Baltimore, Cumberland, and Salisbury. Fee-based services provided to those from other states.

Services Offered

Services for Adults

  • Assessment
    • Administers McCarron Dial Vocational Assessments and functional assessments of basic skill levels.
  • Braille and Reading Instruction
    • Adults and Seniors are taught how to read and write Braille as part of two comprehensive training programs.
  • Community Outreach Programs
    • Offers home teaching services, presentations on blindness, programs for community groups and agencies, convention presentations, in-service training.
  • Computer Training/Assistive Technology
    • Provides training in the use of assistive technology.
  • Counseling
    • Offers consultation, information and referral as well as twice-weekly seminars on adjustment to blindness.
  • Daily Living Skills/Independent Living Skills Training
    • Offers rehabilitation training program, preparing people who are blind for everyday challenges of family, work, and personal achievement. Sponsors senior events (on- and off-site) and offers home teaching services, senior training and support.
  • Employment/Job Training
    • Offers pre-vocational and vocational training, employment opportunities for the blind, and job placement and employment development services. Sells products produced in workshops on site.
  • Information and Referral
    • Provides ongoing referral services.
  • Low Vision Services
    • Offers low vision services.
  • Recreation Services
    • Offers special classes such as gardening, rug making, crafting, and more!
  • Support Groups
    • Holds monthly support group meetings for seniors.
  • Travel/Orientation and Mobility
    • Adults and Seniors are taught how to travel independently with the long white cane.
