iHOPE Academy in New York City has an exciting opportunity for a licensed Teacher of the Visually Impaired to join our Vision Services team! New TVI graduates are encouraged to apply for this position as on-the-job learning is an important part of our program. Candidates must have excellent oral and written communication skills, a positive attitude, a willingness to work in a team, as well as individually. In addition, the Vision Teacher must have a valid NYS license as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) and be a graduate of a recognized program as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired.

iHOPE is a highly specialized school and rehab clinic serving children with traumatic brain injuries. iHOPE creates a positive and caring environment by providing our students with intensive therapies, individualized education, and many opportunities to smile and laugh with friends and therapists. The Teacher of the Visually Impaired can choose to work for either a 10-month or 12-month school year. Our school day is from 9:00 AM-4:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Students experience a day filled with related service sessions, 1:1 academics, and group activities with their peers.

The Vision Services Department at iHOPE is a warm and supportive environment where TVIs are encouraged to be creative, look for new solutions and ideas, and work as a team with all iHOPE staff members in order to best support our students. We have our own office with extensive supplies and materials, as well as access to private therapy rooms in the school when necessary.

As a Vision Teacher at iHOPE, you will have an individual caseload of students who you will work with in 60 minute sessions either individually, in the classroom, with other therapists, or in small social groups. It is vital to be organized and prepared by reviewing IEPs, medical documents, and vision goals. At the end of each session, a session note is written, and a quarterly progress report is due every 3 months. In preparation for annual IEPs, you will interview family members, observe your students in other therapy sessions, directly assess your students, and write a thorough report with suggestions for classroom adaptations and goals for the following school year.
