This method is generally not practiced for coin identification, however many people who have a vision impairment are able to hear the different sounds coins make when they hit the floor or any other hard surface. Remarking about the coin's denomination from its sound is done only when a person has fine tuned their sensory awareness and wants to say "you dropped a quarter." Needless to say, it would not be practical to use this approach in daily transactions!
