Can I still do some car maintenance?
Yes, you can continue to care for your car's maintenance.
Measuring tire air pressure
There are two or three different talking and large print types of tire pressure gauges. You can purchase a "Talking" Reizen Digital Tire Gauge (in English and Spanish) and hear a clear female voice speak the pressure in .5 PSI increments. Or check out Accutire Talking Digital Tire Gauge. (Find these tire guages at Maxiaids) . Alternatively, check out the Programmable Tire Gauge from AutoSport that allows you to measure front and back tire pressures and beeps to let you know when the pressure reaches preset levels. The flashlit screen on this gauge is quite large, and with or without the help of a magnifier, may prove useable. (Find this programable tire guage at AutoSport)
If you have partial vision you may find a magnifier of help or, if you have a CCTV, you may be able to use a regular tire gauge, and then read the results on your CCTV.
Vacuuming the interior or washing the exterior of your car
You can use exactly the same techniques used to scan or cover any surface (also see "I like a clean house".), but here you'll be using different tools. Whether cleaning inside or outside your car, you will need to:
- Assemble everything you need to clean the car before you begin.
- Break the total job down into one manageable area at a time: for the outside of the car, it may be the front hood or for the inside, the passenger-side carpeting, etc.
- Work on one area at a time.
- Work in a pattern, such as left to right, top to bottom.
- Double check the area is thorough clean by using a different pattern or working in a different direction.
- When you've finished each section, use your free hand to follow a specific pattern, and make sure the area feels clean to the touch.
- Move on to the next area, until the entire car is covered, exterior or interior.
Checking the oil or windshield fluid
You may be able to mark the dipstick in a way that you will be able to know where the normal level is.
Filling the oil or the washer fluid
You will need a dedicated funnels. Long-necked and flexible plastic funnels are available at most auto supply stores. Choose whichever you feel most comfortable with. Slowly pour a small amount of oil or washer fluid into the funnel. Be very cautious as, in either case, over filling can be detrimental to your car. Re-measure the oil or fluid to confirm you have the desired amount.
