Can I continue to go sailing or boating with my vision impairment?
There are a variety of water sports involving boats. Some may be easier than others for a person with vision impairment but all are possible.? Dependent on the circumstances the driving may need to be done with or by a sighted companion but hear are a few suggestions:
- Become thoroughly oriented to the boat you plan to use.? You may wish to mark some items with large print or tactual markings.
- For sailing, boats with tillers are preferred over boats with wheels so that the helmsman who is blind or low vision can gain a better feel of the helm. The ?style? and design of boats do not seem to affect the success of sailing for a person with vision impairment. The best feature to consider is the response of the helm to your commands.
- Rowing or sculling is a sport which can be successfully done by a person with a vision impairment using a caller from a boat following behind.
Adaptive equipment such as an auditory compass or sonar or talking GPS?can be helpful. You can find this audito compass shoen in the photo and ?made by TackTick described at the Sailibility Equipment Directory. [link opens in new window]- Try some sensory exercises to increase your sound tracking and localization skills. (See Maximizing all Your Senses.) These are especially useful when at sea or even out on a lake.
- Join or visit a boating club near you for boating and sailing tips.
- Discuss optical devices such as telescopic lenses with your eye doctor. Some of these devices may be helpful for visual spotting. (See What is a Low Vision Examination.)
