Any suggestions on how I can do either ice or roller skating safely?
Skating, both ice and roller can be undertaken by persons with vision impairments. Don't forget--one of the skaters in the 2005 Winter Olympics had a vision impairment. Figure skating is best done with a sighted companion, or on an empty or controlled rink.
To get time on an empty or controlled rink, sign-up for a class.- For ice or roller skating use a guide skater to help call out and prevent collisions with obstacles.
- Always wear safety equipment such as knee and elbow pads.
- Speed skating can be done successfully using bright colored cones or audio cones to define the boundaries of the course. Rubbermaid [link opens in new window] makes the audio cone in the photo at left.
